How it works

What HEIC is and why it causes trouble
Since iOS 11 in 2017, iPhones save photos as HEIC (High Efficiency Image Container) by default. It stores the same quality as JPG in roughly half the space, which is why Apple chose it. The catch is compatibility: many Windows programs, older Android phones, websites and government or school upload forms still do not accept .heic files. Converting to JPG solves that.
To stop your iPhone creating HEIC files in the first place, go to Settings, then Camera, then Formats, and choose Most Compatible. Photos will be saved as JPG from then on, at about twice the file size. When you share or AirDrop photos to a Mac or PC, iOS can also convert them automatically.
Quality and metadata
At the High setting the difference between the HEIC and the JPG is invisible for normal viewing. The JPG will usually be larger than the HEIC, because JPG compression is less efficient; use Image Compressor afterwards if you need smaller files. The date, camera settings and GPS location stored in the photo are not copied to the converted file, which is a privacy benefit when sharing.

Are my photos uploaded?
No. The HEIC decoder runs in your browser, so your photos stay on your device.
Why is the JPG bigger than the HEIC?
HEIC compresses about twice as well as JPG. The JPG keeps the same visual quality, which needs more bytes.
Can I convert HEIC on Windows without installing anything?
Yes. This page works in Chrome, Edge and Firefox on Windows, with no codec or extension needed.
What about HEIC videos or Live Photos?
Only the still images are converted. Live Photo videos are separate .mov files.
