What watermarks are good for
A watermark tells readers what a document is before they read a word: a draft that should not be quoted, a confidential file that must not be forwarded, a sample of paid work, or a copy issued to a specific client. A tiled watermark is harder to crop out of screenshots than a single stamp, which makes it a good deterrent for previews of designs, reports or photographs.
Watermarks are a deterrent, not protection. Someone with a PDF editor can remove them. For documents that must stay private, also add a password with Protect PDF, and share them only with the people who need them.
Tips for a readable result
- An opacity of 15 to 30 percent keeps the text underneath readable while the watermark stays obvious.
- Diagonal text at 45 degrees crosses the most content and is the classic "DRAFT" look.
- Grey or light red is less distracting than black; use your brand colour for a logo-style mark.
- For logos, use a PNG with a transparent background so only the logo appears.
- Text in scripts the standard PDF font cannot encode (such as Chinese or Arabic) is stamped as a sharp image of the text.
Frequently asked questions
Can the watermark be removed?
It is drawn onto the pages, so it cannot be switched off like a comment, but a determined person with editing software could remove it. Combine it with a password for sensitive files.
Will the text underneath still be selectable?
Yes. The watermark sits on top; the original text, links and images are not changed.
Does it work on landscape and rotated pages?
Yes. Placement uses each page as the reader sees it, so the watermark is centred and upright.
Are my files uploaded?
No. Everything runs in your browser.
