Static codes that never expire
Many "free" QR generators create dynamic codes: the code points to the company's own short link, which redirects to your content, tracks every scan and can be switched off when a trial ends. Codes made here are static. Your link, text or Wi-Fi details are stored directly in the pattern, so the code keeps working as long as the destination exists, with no account, no redirect and no tracking. The trade-off is that you cannot change the destination after printing; to update it, print a new code.
Tips for codes that scan every time
- Keep strong contrast: a dark code on a light background. Inverted or pale codes fail on many phones.
- Print at least 2 × 2 cm (0.8 × 0.8 in) for close scanning, and larger for posters: roughly one tenth of the scanning distance.
- Keep the quiet zone (the empty border) of at least four modules.
- Use higher error correction for codes that may get scratched, folded or printed small; it makes the pattern denser.
- Shorter content gives a simpler pattern that scans faster, so link to a short URL where you can.
- Always test the printed code with two different phones before printing hundreds.
Wi-Fi and contact codes
A Wi-Fi code uses the standard WIFI: format, which iPhone and Android cameras recognise and offer to join the network, with special characters escaped correctly. It is perfect for guest networks in homes, cafés and offices. A vCard code saves a contact straight into the phone's address book, which is handy on business cards and name badges. Keep in mind that anyone who can see a code can read its contents.

Can I track how many people scanned my code?
Not with a static code. Link to a URL with UTM parameters and check your analytics instead.
