How it works

Photo sizes by country
- United States: 2 × 2 inches (51 × 51 mm), head 1 to 1 3/8 inches (25 to 35 mm) from chin to top of head. Online visa forms need a square JPEG between 600 × 600 and 1200 × 1200 pixels, no larger than 240 KB.
- United Kingdom: printed photos are 35 × 45 mm with a head height of 29 to 34 mm. Online applications need at least 600 × 750 pixels.
- Schengen area, Australia and most other countries: 35 × 45 mm following the ICAO standard, with the face taking 70 to 80 percent of the height (32 to 36 mm).
- Canada: passports use a larger 50 × 70 mm photo with a 31 to 36 mm head; visitor visas and permits use 35 × 45 mm, and digital photos must be at least 420 × 540 pixels.
- India: passport photos are 35 × 45 mm on a white background. The e-Visa needs a square JPEG between 350 and 1000 pixels and up to 1 MB.
- China: visa photos are 33 × 48 mm with a 28 to 33 mm head. The online application takes a JPEG 354 to 420 pixels wide, 472 to 560 pixels high and 40 to 120 KB.
Rules change and some consulates add their own. Always check the official website of the passport office or embassy before you submit.
Taking a photo that gets accepted
- Face the camera straight on with a neutral expression, eyes open and mouth closed.
- Stand about a metre in front of a plain, light wall with light falling evenly on your face, so there are no shadows behind you.
- Remove glasses (required for US and many other countries), hats and anything covering your face, unless worn for religious or medical reasons.
- Have someone else take the photo from head height, rather than taking a selfie at arm's length, which distorts the face.
Printing the sheet
The print sheet is a 6 × 4 inch (10 × 15 cm) image at 300 DPI, the standard size for photo prints at pharmacies, supermarkets and online labs, and usually the cheapest. Order it at "actual size" with no cropping or borders, then cut along the grey lines. Printing on plain paper at home is not accepted for passports.

No. Cropping, resizing and compression run entirely in your browser. Your face never leaves your device.
Can it remove or whiten the background?
Not automatically. For the best result, take the photo against a plain white or light grey wall; background editing often causes rejections anyway.
How do I hit an exact file size like 240 KB or 50 KB?
Enter it under Max size. The tool picks the highest JPEG quality that fits, so the photo stays as sharp as the limit allows.
Is this photo guaranteed to be accepted?
No tool can guarantee acceptance. The size and head position will match the rules, but lighting, expression and background are checked by officials.
