Extracting pages vs splitting every page
Extract pages creates one new PDF that contains only the pages you list, in the order you list them. It is the quickest way to send one chapter of a report, remove blank pages from a scan, or pull a single signed page out of a long contract. Pages are numbered from 1 as they appear in your PDF reader, not by printed page numbers, which can differ when a document starts with a cover or roman-numeral pages.
Every page as a file produces a separate PDF for each page, which is handy when a scanner has joined many one-page documents, such as invoices or forms, into a single file.
Tips
- To remove pages, extract everything except them. For a 10-page file without page 4, enter
1-3, 5-10. - To reorder pages, list them in the new order, for example
3, 1, 2. - To combine the extracted pages with another document, use Merge PDF.
- Password-protected PDFs need to be unlocked in a PDF reader first.
Frequently asked questions
Does splitting reduce quality?
No. Pages are copied as they are, so text, images and vector graphics are unchanged.
Why does it say a page does not exist?
The range includes a page number larger than the PDF's page count. Check the count shown under the file and adjust the range.
Is my document uploaded?
No. Splitting uses the open-source pdf-lib library inside your browser, so confidential files stay on your device.
Common problems and fixes
- The wrong pages came out: page numbers count every physical page from 1, including covers and blank pages, even if the document prints different numbers on the pages.
- "Not a page or range" error: use digits, hyphens and commas only, such as
2-4, 7. Words and spaces inside a range are not understood. - Too many files to download: with "Every page as a file", use Download to get one ZIP instead of saving each page separately.
- Password prompt in your reader: remove the password first; protected files cannot be split here.
