Why photos show up sideways
Phones store every photo in the sensor's natural orientation and add an EXIF tag saying how it should be turned. Some websites, email clients and older programs ignore that tag, so the photo appears sideways. This tool reads the tag, applies it, and then applies your rotation, so the saved pixels are the right way up everywhere, with no tag needed.
Straightening and flipping
The straighten slider fixes tilted horizons, crooked document photos and slanted buildings. Rotating by an angle that is not a multiple of 90 degrees makes the canvas larger so no corner is cut off; the new corners are filled with the colour you choose (white by default). Crop the result afterwards with Crop Image if you prefer no fill.
Flipping horizontally mirrors the picture, which undoes the mirror effect of many front cameras so text on a T-shirt reads correctly. Flipping vertically turns it upside down in a mirrored way; for a normal upside-down fix, rotate by 180 degrees instead.
Tips
- Keep PNG for screenshots and graphics; JPG and WebP are re-encoded at high quality.
- Rotating a JPG by 90 degrees and back does not visibly lose quality at the settings used here, but always keep your original.
- Re-encoding removes EXIF metadata, including GPS location.
