Choosing a watermark style
A small mark in a corner is the most common choice for photographers and online shops: it credits you without spoiling the picture. The downside is that a corner can be cropped out. A centred or tiled watermark is much harder to remove, which makes it the better choice for proofs you send to clients before payment, or for stock and product images you are worried about being copied.
Size is set as a percentage of each image's width, so a batch of portrait and landscape photos at different resolutions ends up with watermarks that look the same size. Around 3 to 5 percent suits a corner credit; 8 to 12 percent works for a centred proof mark.
Tips
- White text with a shadow reads well on most photos; dark text suits bright, plain backgrounds.
- For logos, use a PNG with a transparent background.
- An opacity of 50 to 70 percent is visible without distracting from the photo.
- Keep your unwatermarked originals: once the mark is saved into the pixels it cannot be removed cleanly.
