Choosing resolution and format
PDF pages have no fixed pixel size, so the resolution setting decides how detailed the images are. A US Letter page at the High setting becomes 1224 by 1584 pixels, which looks crisp on most screens and in presentations. The Print setting doubles each side, making files roughly four times larger, and is worth it for printing, small text or technical drawings you need to zoom into.
JPG gives small files and suits pages with photos. PNG is lossless, keeps text and line art perfectly sharp and is best for diagrams, charts and screenshots of text, at the cost of larger files.
Tips
- To post one page of a PDF on social media, convert at High quality and pick the page you need.
- For slides, PNG avoids the soft halos JPG can add around text.
- Need only some pages? Use Split PDF first to extract them.
- To shrink the resulting images for email, run them through the Image Compressor.
Frequently asked questions
Why do fonts look slightly different from my PDF reader?
If a PDF does not embed its fonts, each viewer substitutes a similar font. Most modern PDFs embed their fonts and render identically.
Are my files uploaded?
No. pdf.js renders the pages locally in your browser, so the document stays on your device.
Can I convert password-protected PDFs?
Not at the moment. Open the file in a PDF reader, remove the password, then convert.
Common problems and fixes
- Text looks soft: choose the Print resolution or PNG format. Small text needs more pixels to stay sharp.
- Files are too large: use Standard resolution with JPG, or run the images through the Image Compressor afterwards.
- Conversion is slow for long documents: each page is rendered in turn, so a 200-page PDF at Print resolution takes a while. Extract the pages you need with Split PDF first.
- A page is blank: some PDFs rely on features browsers cannot render, such as certain 3D or multimedia content. Printing the page to a new PDF first usually fixes it.
